Falling for Fashion
Whether the weather has turned or not, in a few weeks it’s official: fall. The hazy days of summer are behind us, school buses rattle around every corner and recent college grads begin their first jobs in corporate America.
It’s time to buckle down. It’s time to get serious.
This is exactly what fashion designers want us to do. The ready-to-wear collections for fall spell no nonsense gravity in dark, moody hues and razor-sharp silhouettes that favor masculine fabrications and androgynous cuts. Now’s the time to embrace your inner rocker chick and military sergeant (think slim leather jackets and big buttoned pea coats in shades of navy, green and black).
The flipside? You needn’t abandon your femininity in its entirety. Lace, ruffled blouses, bows and gorgeous cocktail dresses abound. There’s plenty of sparkle particularly in accessories, so glam it up with crystals. This summer we launched the Crystal Collection of watches ($70-90), which are smartly affordable and a scintillating fix on the wrist.
There’s a way to ease from one season to another with grace. That means right now you can still wear your florals, bohemian frocks and bright T-length cocktail dresses. You can flaunt your colorful heels, your berry-bright bags and black-and-white two-toned shoes. If you’re a vintage lover like me, it’s the moment to pull out those artsy woven textile bags that are (or look) handcrafted and give them another spin. It’s a softer more playful option than the structured bags we’ll see deeper in the season.
Though you may not be ready to give up the prized pleasures of summer, take consolation in knowing that some key wardrobe staples from the eclipsing season can live on through early fall. For someone already weeping the loss of beach weather, at least the fashion transition is one I can handle.
In a fashion frame of mind,
