Fashion’s First Family

As we begin 2009, I’m enthralled with one of the most important American Style moments to occur this January, the Presidential Inauguration. Grand speculation surrounds the potential fashion choices the Obama family will make. This sparks excitement as we attempt to predict their final selections when they walk down Pennsylvania Avenue on January 20th.

Dressing stylishly in winter presents a set of fashion challenges. Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha need to find ensembles that keep them warm and comfortable, while making a definitive statement that will set the tone for their fashion choices to come.

Every fashionista will have her eye on Michelle. She may opt for traditional red or patriotic blue, but something tells me her exquisite taste has surprises in store for all of us when it comes to color. A refreshing option that is utterly en vogue would be a winter floral print, an appealing trend that is as  appropriate for an Inaugural Parade as it is for the workplace. Florals hint of springtime during the cold winter months and perhaps parallel the fresh outlook the Obamas bring to the White House. This season, flower prints are on everything from dresses to blouses and skirts, even accessories. They are bold yet utterly feminine.

Here’s a tip for you. If you’d like to wear this trend, go for one statement-making piece, instead of wearing florals all over. It will make the look understated and elegant – something we know that the future First Lady accomplishes in spades. As for Mrs. Obama’s preference in watches, she prefers a sleek silver bracelet-style watch with a black face. If you wish to follow in her footsteps, don a similar look in Timex’s Women’s Elegant watch with a silver bracelet. It’s a classic you’ll wear throughout the new President’s four-year term, if not longer.

Another tip for winter attire is not to forget eye-catching accessories. They do wonders to break up the bulk of heavy winter knits and layered clothing. High-waist belts cinch your torso at just the right place – even over a coat. Long leather gloves borrowed from grandma’s bureau are sleek and slimming. A dress watch with a chain-link bracelet is delicate on the wrist. Pointy-toed ankle boots under a wide-leg trouser make a distinct and stylish point.

As we hunker down for what looks like the worst winter in ages, I can only hope that the fashion moments of the Presidential Inauguration give us a bright reason to celebrate, and that one or two of these dressing suggestions will keep you stylishly toasty!

In a fashion frame of mind,

aeg
